BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Soca Monarch Committee has released the names of the artistes for both categories who will be fighting for a space in the finals at the upcoming soca-monarch semi-finals scheduled for December 2 at Carnival Village.
There will be 12 persons in the Groovy category which is a slower tempo and beat to the Power category which will feature 16 competitors.
Chairperson of the soca monarch competition, Dwayne Sturge said that he believes that both categories will be keenly contested and said there are a host of newcomers.
Out of the 12 persons in the groovy segment, eight will advance to the finals while 10 will advance in the Power category from a field of 16.
Sturge also said that the 10 in the Power category will come against last year’s soca monarch, King Konris and that via a texting promotion a semi-finalist can make it into the finals for that category.
He said there will be a week where persons can vote via texting the name of the artiste whom they feel should be in the finals and the person with the most votes will advance to the finals.
Konris Maynard will be competing in the Groovy category with a song titled ‘Party Long’. His Power song has not been released as yet.
Many of the artistes have released songs for both categories including new comers Dedria ‘Cinnamon’ Delsol, Shaday ‘Sha-Angel’ Peters, Rolhensha Henry, Dijon Webbe and Alison Dore, Natasha ‘Dimepiece’ Benjamin and Kevin ‘A Stitch in Time’ Donovan.
Soca monarch regulars will also be a part of the competition including Tonicia ‘Queen Anastasia’ Martin, Jacinth ‘Shakki Star Fire’ Cao, Royston ‘Mr. World’ Wigley, Kelvin ‘Ras Kelly’ Kelly and Delison ‘X-Man’ Roper.
Patrons may also be excited to see former Road March winner who sang ‘Living in the band’ and father of King Konris, Lincoln Maynard who will be entering the power category with his song entitled ‘Tonight’.
Fantastic Tunda is also a newcomer to the Soca competition but not the calypso arena and his ‘Bite and Roll’ has been very popular on the airwaves.
