ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 29th, 2011 – Students of the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre helped to spread holiday cheers as they hosted their Multi-Cultural Christmas programme on the school’s grounds at John’s Hole.

Both the Premier and Minister Walwyn said that they were pleased with the students’ performance as they did a “spectacular job.”

Premier Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith and Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn were among the many guests present to witness the outstanding presentation by the students on Sunday, November 27. The ministers were also invited to sing “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” during one of the performances, of which they had fun.

Acting Principal Mrs. Vansittart Huggins said she was pleased with the students’ performance and the turn out from the community.

“The students performed very well,” she said, adding that the programme focused on ‘giving’ as it spoke of the meaning of Christmas and portrayed the spirit of sharing.

Mrs. Huggins encouraged all attendees to keep the tradition of serenading alive as it is a pivotal part of the culture of the Virgin Islands.

Guests were treated to the dramatisation of two home scenes in which the homeowners prepared for the visit of carollers. One scene focused on “The Birth of Christ” while the other focused on the “Festive Spirit” of the Holidays.

The students made coconut bread, sang several Christmas carols, played the recorders and gave a number of performances to the delight of the audience.

Local fungi band, “The Serenaders” accompanied by Arliene T. Penn on the Tenor (steel) pan was also present to provide musical entertainment.

The Christmas Programme at the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre is the first in a series of programme scheduled for the upcoming 2011 holiday season.

The Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre serves as the Territory’s special needs school proving a range of programmes and services to cater for the emotional and physical disabilities of the students.
