Hundreds turnout to join NPT in 50th anniversary celebrations

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, November 29th, 2011  – Hundreds turned out to the Queen Elizabeth II National Park over the weekend to commemorate the golden anniversary celebrations hosted by the National Parks Trust’ (NPT) of the Virgin Islands.

    The week of festivities held from November 20 – 27 concluded with a two-day Jazz and Blues Concert Series, which was the highlight of the celebrations, featuring artists from the Virgin Islands (VI) and United States Virgin Islands (USVI) including Sistah Joyce, Quito & The Edge, Blue Essence, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) Jazz Ensemble, Mr. Bertrand “Washasha X” Lettsome, Ms. April Glasgow, Pan City and Spectrum Band.

     

    International artists included world-renowned nine-time Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Mr. John Legend, UB40’s lead singer Mr. Ali Campbell, and Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble.

     

    Speaking at the concert, Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr. the Honourable Kedrick Pickering vowed that the new Government through his Ministry will work diligently to “preserve and conserve our natural treasures”.

     

    Director of NPT Mr. Joseph Smith Abbott and chairman of the NPT Mrs. Ingrid Moses-Scatliffe thanked the sponsors and everyone who attended the concert and supported their endeavours.

     

    The week of festivities also included the Annual Flower Show, Arbour Day Ceremony, educational programmes and environmentally-aware exhibits.

     

    The National Parks Trust (NPT) was established in 1961 by government as the agency responsible for the Territory’s parks. The NPT is mandated under the National Parks Act of 2006 with preserving the Territory’s valuable natural resources while managing 21 national parks throughout the Virgin Islands.
