Three-bus accident sends two to hospital

By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A mid-morning traffic accident involving three passenger buses in Palmetto Point resulted in two females being transported to the hospital for treatment to their injuries.

The accident, which involved HA121, HA129 and HA221, occurred at approximately 9:00 this morning (Nov. 30) on the Island’s Main Road in the vicinity of Palmetto Point’s Community Centre.

Trevor ‘Lighter’ Mason of Saddlers Village, who was the driver of HA121, explained to this media house the circumstances that caused the accident.

“I was coming from town heading towards Old Road side on the Island’s Main Road when a blue pickup stopped suddenly near the dirt road east of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church.

“The pickup stopped suddenly to make a right turn on the dirt road and I immediately responded by stopping my vehicle so as to avoid a collision. However, after stopping, HA221 came from the rear and hit my bus.”

In his explanation, the driver of HA221, Jarryed Saunders of Lamberts Village, concurred with what Mason said.

“While travelling from Basseterre and coming through Trinity, HA121 was in front of me and stopped suddenly. I tried to avoid hitting it but the driver pulled out at the same time and my vehicle hit it on the right side.”

SKNVibes however learned that Saunders was attempting to overtake HA121, but while in the process the blue pickup had already turned onto the dirt road and the driver of HA121 had recommenced on his journey.

While trying to overtake, another passenger bus (HA129) driven by Paul Huggins of Challengers was travelling in the opposite direction, and in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision Saunders swerved, hit the right side of HA129 and the right rear of HA121.

After being hit, HA129 ran off the road and struck a concrete wall, which resulted in injuries to Cherisse Queeley and Venelma Phillip, both of Sandy Point.

A unit from the Emergency Medical Services transported the two women to the JNF General Hospital where they were treated for their injuries. However, up to press time, it was not known if they were discharged or admitted.

All three of the vehicles were damaged.

The front bumper and left headlight of HA221 were damaged and the rear bumper of HA121 was also damaged. The left side of HA129 was badly damaged, while its right side was slightly damaged and the left rear trafficator was broken.

According to Inspector Vaughan Henderson, Sub-Divisional Commander of District ‘B’, the three drivers were issued notice of police prosecution. He also said that investigations into the accident are ongoing.
