The Vice President of Human Resource, Cable and Wireless [St. Kitts-Nevis] Limited, Curtis Martin, was elected and sworn in today as the new Speaker of the House following a Special Session called to pay tribute to his predecessor, Marcella Liburd.

Shortly after Liburd demitted the office, Deputy Speaker and Nevis Reformation Party Parliamentarian Patrice Nisbett presided over the start of the Sitting.

Following Nisbett’s departure from the chair, Sam Condor, Leader of Government Business in the National Assembly, Deputy Prime Minister and the Labour Party’s Parliamentarian, nominated Martin as Speaker of the House and was seconded by Minister Nigel Carty.

~~Adz:Right~~Meanwhile, tributes were paid to the former Speaker by Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas and all members of his Cabinet, as well members on the Opposition Bench including People’s Action Movement lone Parliamentarian Shawn Richards.
Mark Brantley, Leader of the Opposition, was absent from the Special Session but sent a written apology which was read by the former Speaker.

In his address, Dr. Douglas highly commended Liburd on the professionalism she exuded during her tenure as Speaker of the House. He also noted that a bird pecked him and informed that she would be contesting in the next general elections.

This was echoed by a number of the Labour Party Parliamentarians, who declared that her absence from the august body would be short lived and, in the near future, her presence would be on the side in which they were seated.
