2nd Annual MiyVue.com/ZIZ King of the Tents Calypso Competition Set for 21st December

Press Release

Basseterre St. Kitts, December 9th, 2011 - Two media organizations in St. Kitts & Nevis are joining forces this year to present, what could very well turn out to be, one of the most exciting and fun-filled carnival events for 2011.

At a special ceremony held on Wednesday morning, (7th December, 2011), at Port Zante, representatives from the online media outlet, MiyVue.com and officials from ZIZ Radio & Television Station, participated in the official launch of what is to be called, the MiyVue.com/ZIZ King of the Tents Calypso Competition, scheduled to take place on Wednesday 21st December, at Fat Tuesday, from 9:00pm.

CEO of MiyVue.com, Mr. Val Henry, said, “The King of the Tents is a second year feature to the carnival season line-up.  It was introduced in 2010 by MiyVue.com, in collaboration with ZIZ Radio & Television, to feature the best of the social commentators; the calypsonians who do not necessarily qualify for the Finals of the Senior Calypso Monarch Competition.”

“These are the ones however, who provide the flavor and sometimes the most memorable lines in calypso during the season.  It is ‘a not to be missed show’; it is a barrel of laughter and excitement.  You never know how many new verses will be added; you never know how the costumes will change. Simply put, it is a night of belly bursting fun,” Henry continued.

He said the event is designed to help in the promotion of the art-form of calypso in St. Kitts & Nevis, especially the unique styles and creativity of our witty, funny and entertaining calypsonians.

Meanwhile, Mr. Grell Browne, the Advertising & Marketing Manager for ZIZ indicated that, “Last year, ZIZ teamed with MiyVue.com to bring to the public, the King of the Tents and the show was an overwhelming success; and the persons who attended enquired as to whether or not it would be repeated this year, to become an annual event. We have analysed the response from last year’s show and we decided yes, it must be an annual carnival feature.”

As we begin this journey said Browne, we must also be reminded that this year, ZIZ celebrated its 50th Anniversary and one of the events organized for the occasion was a calypso contest that was won by Navigator; therefore it is not too shocking to see that ZIZ is again involved in an activity that further promotes our culture and calypso in particular.

The ZIZ Marketing Manager said that the support of the station this year and partnership with MiyVue.com is further testimony to the station’s commitment to the development of local artistes and calypso in St. Kitts & Nevis.  We are looking forward to this event because it is going to be a great one.

He continued, “In addition, as the premier media partner for carnival, ZIZ will be streaming most of the shows and providing live radio coverage of the events for Sugar Mas’ 40:40.”

The representative for the Legends Calypso Tent, Ms. Jackie Mc Clave, who also spoke at the launch ceremony on behalf of the Grand Masters Proud Sounds Tent, said that given the success and excitement generated from last year’s show, the bands are also looking forward to another great event this year.

In wrapping up the ceremony, Henry stated that the calypsonians who will be selected are those with songs that may be considered humorous, hilarious, comical, amusing, funny or jokey, witty, enjoyable, pleasurable and not necessarily serious.

The ten calypsonians who will participate are to be selected this Friday, 9th December, on ZIZ Radio between 1:30pm-2:30pm. The public will be invited to call in to vote on their choice for the field of calypsonians to enter the contest.

There will be no formal judges said Henry. The public will be the ones making the final decisions about the winners. The criteria he said for judging will include crowd response and overall impact on the audience. Patrons will be given ballots to cast their votes.

Persons in attendance on the night, and those viewing via the live internet stream on MiyVue.com, would be able to vote to determine the winner. Fans here and overseas would also have the opportunity to send a TEXT Vote for their favorite calypsonian, compliments local telecommunications company, LIME.

There will be no admission fee for the event either, confirmed Henry, but patrons will be asked to make a donation of their choice. Those making a donation will qualify for one of the various draws that will be made, for various gifts and prizes.

A special raffle will also be held, with winners being presented with very good carnival/Christmas gifts. The management of Fat Tuesday meanwhile said that while vendors will be allowed at the event, they MUST contact the restaurant to register if they wish to be a part of this grand occasion.
