FRIGATE BAY, ST. KITTS - VICE PRESIDENT of the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club Mr. Lee Bailey yesterday afternoon received two cheques totalling EC$35 000 at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club House towards sponsorship of the 2008 Royal St. Kitts Amateur Golf Open.

The first presentation was made by newly-appointed Country Manager of Digicel St. Kitts-Nevis Mr. Greg Gilpin-Payne, who handed over a check of EC$20 000 on behalf of his company, signifying their cash commitment as the main sponsors of this years’ event.

The second monetary presentation of EC$15 000 was made by Mr. Glen Phillip, Marketing and Customer Services Manager of The Cable, representing that business entity’s commitment to the event  as one of four major sponsors named at yesterday afternoon’s handing over ceremony.

The two other major sponsors of the 2008 Royal St. Kitts Amateur Golf Open are BMW Prestige Motors and TDC St. Kitts and Nevis Ltd. Unfortunately, these companies were not present at the handing over ceremony. However, Bailey indicated that BMW Prestige Motors would be providing a new Series 1 BMW vehicle that would go to the golfer who wins the ‘hole in one’ section of the competition, and that TDC St. Kitts and Nevis Ltd would be sponsoring prizes and trophies.

The ‘hole in one’ competition challenges golfers to get the ball from the Tee Box to the 12th hole which is at the end of the course and separated by water traps. It is even made more difficult by the fact that golfers have to strike their ball into and against the down-wind (our natural north-easterly trade winds).

This is the second year that Digicel St. Kitts & Nevis has come forward as Title Sponsors for this event. Digicel is also the official mobile telecommunications provider for the tournament. The Cable has been sponsoring this sporting event in the Federation for over 15 years and has in the past been the Title Sponsor of the event.

The event has been in existence for some 28 years and this year it will be competed on the greens of the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club over the May 9-11 weekend. Any amateur golfer can enter this competition, whether local, regional or international in origin.
