    Construction of a Co-ed Juvenile Rehabilitation Centre to begin next month
     
    ~~Adz:Left~~Basseterre, St. Kitts - Government has announced that the construction of the much needed youth rehabilitation centre is scheduled to begin as early as next month.
     
    According to a recent Post Cabinet Briefing, Minister responsible for Social and Community Development, the Hon. Sam Condor gave an update on the implementation process.
     
    Details were not released however it was said that the facility will cost somewhere around 5.5 million dollars to construct and will be built in Harris’ Village.
     
    “The Centre will be a key institution assisting in the reformation of socially abnormal young men and women, many of whom would otherwise turn out to be a menace to society. The project represents a key strategy of the government in dealing with criminal activity among the youth,” the release read.
     
    The St. Kitts and Nevis and Co-Ed Juvenile Rehabilitation will serve as a replacement for the Harris’ Home for Boys, housing delinquent youth from both islands.
     
    According to the Crime Statistics provided by the St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, juveniles were responsible for 67 detected criminal offences in 2007; breakings-15, larcenies-8, robberies-7, woundings-14, malicious damage/arson-5, firearms & drugs-8, other-10.
