By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE of the carnival marshals of the Sugar Mas’ 40/40 celebrations was rushed to the Joseph N. France General Hospital (JNF) yesterday (Jan. 2) after a tractor ran over his feet.

This publication heard that the incident occurred somewhere in the vicinity of Baker’s Corner, but a release issued by Ivor Blake of the Security and Public Safety Committee for Carnival indicated that the incident occurred at the junction of Sandown Road and the Bay Road at about 6:00 p.m.

Blake identified the injured Marshal as Joseph Hutchinson and explained that the incident occurred while he was providing marshal duties for the Fusion Fantasy Carnival Troupe at the Grand Parade.

He explained that a tractor which was pulling the trailer carrying the Small Axe Band “accidentally ran over his feet”.

The man, according to Blake, was take to the hospital and after being x-rayed it was discovered that his left foot sustained multiple fractures.

“Mr Hutchinson is now warded at the JNF and is expected to undergo surgery on Wednesday 4th January, 2012. According to the attending doctor his prognosis for complete recovery is good.”

Hutchinson is one of approximately 30 Marshals who were tasked with ensuring that revellers maintain a safe distance from the wheels of band trailers and the tractors which pull them.

No injuries were reported to have occurred during the J’Ouvert festivity which took place on December 26, 2011, and it is hoped that none would occur during today’s Sugar Mas’ 40/40 Las’ Lap Jam Session.
