ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, December 30th, 2011 – “Unity, pride and an enhanced level of customer service” for 2012 was the constant message Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark Vanterpool hammered home to his team during his ministry’s Eighth Annual Employee Recognition Dinner.

In delivering the keynote and motivational address, Minister Vanterpool embraced the ministry’s 2012 theme, “Personal Responsibility In Delivering Excellence PRIDE” focusing on the important role public officers’ play in executing Government’s mandate and their personal responsibility in motivating and inspiring each other to do so.

In highlighting how the Ministry affects the daily lives of the public from dusk to dawn, the Minister stressed the importance of providing stakeholders with excellent and exceptional customer service.

“In my opinion, service excellence is about listening deeply to customers’ needs and actually providing the solution to that need - no matter how simple or complex,” the Minister said, adding, “Often, customers need the simplest of solutions and as service providers we over-complicate it!”

He added, “We should also take pride in maintaining high standards, pride in the quality of our work, and pride in being held accountable and personally responsible for our actions in ensuring the success and growth of our organisation.”

In asking officers to commit to making personal change to ensure that professional, effective and efficient services are delivered to the public, the Minister concluded with an inspirational quote from Robert Quinn stating, “One key to successful leadership is continuous personal change. Personal change is a reflection of our inner growth and empowerment.”

During the ceremony, awards were given in the categories of outstanding performance, employee of the year, leadership, department development, exceptional customer service, most improved worker, attendance and punctuality, distinguished technician, professional award, distinguished administrative support staff and retirement. Special recognition awards were given to Dorbreen Barnes and Shemroy Skeete to show appreciation for the contributions they have made over the years to the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC).

Premier and Minister for Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, Deputy Governor Mrs. V. Inez Archibald and Acting Permanent Secretary Mrs. Arlene Smith-Thompson were also present and shared congratulatory remarks and commended officers for their exceptional contributions to the public service.

The Ministry of Communications and Works’ Eight Annual Employee Recognition Dinner was held December 21, 2011 at Maria’s By the Sea and brought together officers under the Ministry of Communications and Works, its units, departments and statutory bodies.
