May Day Press Release 6th May, 2008

~~Adz:Right~~The voice of Change is distinctive for May Day in St. Kitts and Nevis. Historically, workers' movements demonstrate the need for Change by their turnout at the annual march held in Basseterre.

Yet the dwindled turnout yesterday May 5, 2008 sent a clear message that the costly parade thrown by the Labour Government would not distract attention from the serious matters now facing the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. This symbolic disapproval to the Labour Government concerns matters such as the inadequate support to the ex-sugar workers, outstanding promises to factory workers at the industrial site and delayed wage increases for civil servants.

To demonstrate the need for Change, thousands of people turned out over the course of the day to participate in May Day events held at PAM Headquarters. Beginning with a breakfast attended by 600 persons, the various activities concluded at about midnight.

This marked success is attributed to the willingness of the People's Action Movement (PAM) to address the Government's failure to the above workers' concerns, as well as similar issues in the deplorable working conditions for police officers and the surging crime rate in St. Kitts and Nevis. On the latter issue, Political Leader Mr. Lindsay Grant indicated that he still awaited a reply on his letter for a National Response on Crime, sent to Prime Minister Dr. Douglas on April 22, 2008.
