Sylk is Montserrat’s Calypso Monarch

    BRADES, Montserrat, January 4th, 2012  – Garnett “Sylk” Thompson took home a $10,000 cash prize as the new Calypso Monarch at the close of the Montserrat Festival 2011.

     

    Sylk, who was one of the first calypsonians to release their entries on local radio, was a crowd favourite throughout the eliminations, semi-finals and the finals on December 30.

     

    His stellar performances of Never Give Up and Changing World brought him 840 points ahead of Alvin “Black Jaguar” Sweeney with 783. Both artists are on the Paran Sounds label.

     

    Other winners throughout the evening were:
    • Best Mountain Chicken Song and $1000 for James “Cruiser” Browne – De Mountain Chicken Sick
    • Best Social Commentary and $1.250.00 for Sylvena “Khandi” Malone with Melting Pot
    • Most Creative Composition and $1,250.00 for Kevin “King Natty” Farrell with Rose, Goddess of Radio
    • Most Improved Calypsonian and $500.00 James “Cruiser” Browne
    • Most Patriotic Song and $1,000.00 Garnett “Sylk” Thompson  for Never Give Up
    • People’s Choice Award: Sylk
