Washington Archibald High School celebrates their victory
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER three days of science, mathematics and technology at Carnival Village, Tucker-Clarke Primary School and Washington Archibald High School emerged best overall primary and secondary schools of the National SCIMATECH Fair, though all of the competing schools helped to make the show a resounding success.

Gary Morian, one of SCIMATECH’s lead organisers and teacher at Basseterre High School, stated in his remarks during the closing ceremony that “the students should be very proud of working so hard to get their exhibits organised”.

Over 150 exhibits were on display from May 7-9, producing many winners aside from the top prizes. Cayon Primary School amazingly earned Best Overall Project and Runner-up Best Project for their exhibits entitled “Home Garden and Food Security” and “Organic Fertilisers”, respectively.

The secondary level students of Cayon also did very well, taking home both the Best Lower and Best Upper Secondary Project for their respective exhibits “Bridging the Gap” and “Technically Speaking”.

Molineux Primary School used their exhibit “Lift Truck” to take the trophy for Best Lower Primary School Project, while Cayon’s “Home Garden and Food Security” Project won its second trophy for the day as Best Upper Primary Project.

Overall, organisers of the event said they were extremely happy that the students, teachers and judges had taken the time to participate in the “high-quality exhibition”. They added that they hope SCIMATECH would give students a better appreciation of how science and technology influences their lives and the world around them, while also working as a tool to better prepare them for their upcoming examinations.

The Ministry of Education and UNESCO collaboratively hosted this year’s SCIMATECH under the theme “Promoting National and Regional Development through Innovations in Science and Technology”.

While this had been the first SCIMATECH Fair hosted in over six years, the organisers of the event said they hoped that this year’s success would help to revive it as a bi-annual event.

“SCIMATECH shows how far our nation has come in this our Silver Jubilee…and it is clear to me that innovation is alive in our schools. This interest in science and technology can be sustained if the momentum created by SCIMATECH is continued,” Minister of Education Sam Condor was quoted as saying during the course of the event.
