BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - STUDENTS of the Maurice Hillier Memorial Junior School are once again on their mission of no TV watching for an entire week as they are currently celebrating their eight annual “No TV Week” of activities.

The No TV Week was launched by the Reverend Wycherley Gumbs on WINN FM Radio Station on Sunday, May 11 and scheduled to conclude on Sunday, May, 18.

The objectives of the week are to improve family time, foster a love for reading as a replacement for watching TV, improve healthy lifestyles, and to empower parents with values for better parenting styles.

The school has also organised daily activities for students to see how their time can be spent educationally without watching TV.

On Tuesday, it’s Story Character Dress up Day which will be held under the theme “Building

    The Sports Personalities

your self-esteem”, while in the evening, at around 6:30 p.m. at the Old boy’s School, parents will be invited to a panel discussion titled “Grandmas’ Parenting Styles - Yesteryear vs. Present Day”.

Wednesday is Nutritious Snack and Crazy Sneakers Day and students will be involved in Reading Games. A discussion on “How to develop constructive ways to express anger and resolve conflict” is also slated for this day, as well as a Photo Competition.

The photographs to be used in this competition will be those of students and teachers of the school, which will require participants to guess who they are.

The no TV initiative began in 2001 under the theme “Help Our Pupils Excel” [HOPE]. The principal and teachers of the school thought it would be a very good idea to have families bonding with the children and sharing their experiences.

They strongly believe that parents need to spend quality time with their children by having fun and listening to each other without the TV, as well as sharing with them other ways of enjoyment.

The week of activities will continue on Thursday, May 15 with a “Name that Book” Classroom Competition, Decorated Hat Day and Story Reading.

The school will also be hosting its Rainbow Pageant at Carnival Village at 6:30

Those who will be participating in the pageant are Elkreen Morton and Chenelle Richardson, Adwon Carty and Sarai Hutchinson, Xadene Williams and Anique George, Krystal Hanley and Caslyn Wilkes, and also Chavicia Flanders and Evans Jean.

Finally, on Friday, placard-bearing students and teachers will be parading through the streets of Basseterre from 9 a.m. until 12 noon.

~~Adz:Left~~ The week is not only designed for the non-viewing of television programmes, but also no cellular phone call, no computer chatting, no Game Boy et cetera.

According to a release from the school, parents need to show their children, “that not all viewed on TV is good and educational. They can discuss what is seen and have children give their input into what other ways problems could be solved.”

We have also involved the other private schools in the form of PLEDGE CARDS, where students will pledge not to view TV but rather be engaged in other suggested activities,” the release stated.
