Suspect believed to have accidentally shot himself

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man is in police custody charged with robbing the Star Chinese Restaurant on West Square Street on Sunday, January 22, 2012.

Charged with robbery is Alistair Isaac of Neverson Street, Newtown.

According to the Manager of the Star Chinese Restaurant, at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Sunday while he, another employee and a customer were in the eating house, a masked man entered, brandished a gun and demanded that they hand over all monies in the cash register.

The Manager noted that he immediately complied and gave the robber an undisclosed sum of money.

He also noted that after handing over the money, the masked gunman made good his escape by running south along West Square Street and onto the Bay Road.

He further noted that a report was made at the Basseterre Police Station on the same night of the incident.

This media house learnt that later that night, a man reportedly went to the JNF General Hospital to seek treatment for a gunshot wound and the police were notified.

The man turned out to be Isaac, who it is believed accidentally shot himself while escaping from the robbery scene. This information was however not confirmed by the police.

Additionally, reports state that the police visited the hospital and investigations led to Isaac being placed under police guard until his discharge from the medical institution.

Isaac was subsequently taken to the Basseterre Police Station where he was formally arrested and charged with robbery.

This is the second time in as many weeks that the Star Chinese Restaurant was robbed.

The first robbery took place at about 9:00 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 15) when a masked gunman entered the establishment and robbed the owners of an undisclosed sum of money.

According to the Manager, as a result of the two incidents, management has put a security system in place to avoid future robberies.
