BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THERE was a hung jury in the trial of Kassim Buchanan 8-4 who was charged with wounding with intent and unlawful wounding, yesterday, Jan. 25.

Originally brothers Kassim and Chaddin Buchanan were jointly charged with the above mentioned charges, and had both pleaded not guilty but moments before the trial began, Chaddin pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.
He will be sentenced on February 16.

The trial began Jan. 24, and the prosecution alleges that Kassim did wound Leroy Veira in Sandy Point on Nov. 14, 2009 with intent and also committed unlawful wounding against Veira.

Kassim represented himself while Crown Counsel Rhonda Nisbett-Browne was lead prosecutor in the matter.

Nisbett-Browne called a total of five witnesses to support the prosecution’s claims about the incident that was said to have occurred sometime after 5:00 p.m. on Station Street, Sandy Point.

The witness included Veira, Dr. Cameron Wilkinson and the investigating officer in the matter.

The case will be traversed to the next assizes.

Another wounding matter began at the Basseterre High Court yesterday, which is the case involving Joseph Harvey who is charged with unlawful wounding and wounding with intent of Richard Mitchum.

The incident was said to have occurred on March 3, 2011, at Lynches Mountain.
