BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - RENEWABLE basis; both of which were approved “in principle” by Cabinet.

During Friday’s (May 16th) Cabinet meeting, Binger outlined to the members how each of the renewable energy projects would significantly decrease the federation’s dependency on expensive fossil fuels.

Binger proposed the implementation of a 10 Megawatt wind farm that would provide the equivalent of 25% of the minimum electricity needs of domestic and commercial consumers.

According to the Post Cabinet Press Briefing, “Cabinet has granted permission for several locations to be used for full scale wind testing to begin so that specific wind sites can be scientifically located”.

The Consultant also suggested a ‘biomass energy project’ which will utilize wild cane and waste material to generate clean electricity.  ~~Adz:Right~~

A project of the nature, the briefing read, would require a facility that will use at least 60% of the waste (including paper, plastic, rubber, tyres, vegetative material, and linen/cloth material) that usually ends up at the landfill at Conaree.

Both projects would not only diminish the nation’s fuel costs and dependencies but also advance the federation’s agenda to protect the environment.

The briefing also listed other advantages that the renewable energy projects would create including the biomass project’s forecast to produced over 400,000 barrels of bio-oil for local use and for export to special markets in the U.S, generating about US$30M in foreign exchange annually and the creation of 250 jobs for locals.
