Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, January 27th, 2012   – Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark Vanterpool is forging ahead with Government’s plans to reduce traffic congestion in Road Town.

As such, Minister Vanterpool is announcing that his ministry will resume construction works on the Methodist Manse Road next week from Tuesday, January 31 for an estimated duration of six to eight weeks.

The works represent phase II of the project which include civil works and the cutting of a new access road.

According to the works Minister, the road widening project which initially began in early October 2011 is very important to the ministry’s efforts in reducing the current traffic congestion in Road Town and will further assist Government with developing and maintaining the Territory’s road network.

“As an alternate route we want to make sure that it is completed,” Honourable Vanterpool told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

In addition, the Minister stated that he wants to see the work progress and completed out of concern for the residents in the area.

“We have concerns about the residents, from a dust point of view. The completion of this project is of paramount importance,” he stressed.

Phase I of the project included the excavation of the hillside, blasting and hammering of rocks and the relocation of power lines. Phase III will see additional road widening.

As a result of the construction works, the road known as the Paul Wattley By-pass Road will be closed to traffic travelling east from Russell Hill at the junction to the St. Georges Primary School and access from Joe’s Hill road will be restricted to residents only.

Persons dropping off or picking up children at St. Georges Primary School are asked to use the Main Street access for the duration of the project.

Traffic signs and cones will be used to dictate traffic flow for the duration of the project and the public is asked to adhere to all traffic signs and to use caution while driving in the work zone.

The Ministry of Communications and Works is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the continued development and maintenance of the Territory’s public infrastructure.
