Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, January 31st 2012 - The St. Kitts-Nevis Students’ Association (SKNSA) at Cave Hill hosted its first Inter-High School Public Speaking Competition on Friday, 27th January, 2012 at the Basseterre High School.

The event was organised by Mr. Azard Gumbs, a law student and President of the St. Kitts- Nevis Students Association at Cave Hill. The two participating schools were the Basseterre High School, represented by Jamalje Bassue, and the Cayon High School, represented by Blestina Charles.

The competition took place in two rounds. In round one the students delivered a prepared speech on the topic: “It generally better for people to pursue higher education having just completed their compulsory secondary education." In round two the students were given three minutes to present on an impromptu topic: “While extra-circular activities are not mandatory they play an important role in your education.”  For both rounds the students had the option to agree or disagree with the proposition, and, both competitors chose to agree.

Jamalje Bassue was adjudged the overall winner of the competition. He also won both rounds - the Prepared and Impromptu Speech.

“As university students, we recognise the important role that tertiary education plays in the overall development of an individual. A university experience not only serves to enhance an individual’s social and academic skills, but it also seeks to equip the individual with valuable lessons for daily living.

In light of these benefits and others, we as an association felt that this competition would stimulate interest among secondary school students as far as tertiary education is concerned.

On behalf of the St. Kitts- Nevis Students’ Association at Cave Hill, I would like to thank those who assisted us in ensuring the event was a success. Special thanks must be extended to the TDC Group of Companies for donating the prizes that were given to the participants, and Mr. Warner of Warner’s One Stop for donating the winner’s trophy to the winning school. We are extremely proud of the students who rose to the challenge and performed very well. We are also very grateful to the principals and teachers of the participating schools, who worked with the students to ensure that they were well prepared,” stated Azard Gumbs.
