ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, January 31st, 2012   – Seven public officers were recognised as the Government’s Employees of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2011.

The ceremony, which was held last week at Maria’s by the Sea Conference Room recognised Gregory Mendez, Water and Sewerage Department, Atoya George, Conservation and Fisheries Department, Joy Scatliffe, Department of Information and Public Relations, Collene Hazel, Ministry of Finance, Elvera Smith, Solid Waste Department, Royston Percival, Her Majesty’s Prison and Lauretta Powell, Deputy Governor’s Office.

His Excellency the Governor Mr. Boyd McCleary, CMG, CVO, delivering congratulatory remarks to the honourees expressed his delight in being at the ceremony as well as his pleasure in the continuation of the quarterly celebration.

He said, “It is proper that we recognise our colleagues who deliver exemplary service to members of the public and their colleagues, and I think that it is right that we have a means by which they are recognised publicly before friends and families.”

Deputy Governor Mrs. V. Inez Archibald expressed congratulations to the honourees on behalf of the public service of the Virgin Islands for being selected as employees of the quarter, and expressed her thanks to the honourees for continuing to contribute to building what we are trying to achieve, which is a world class public service.

“I want to take this opportunity to not only congratulate you but also to say thank you for willingly understanding what we will have to put up with as public officers in the next year with the curtailing of our increments, I think that is for love of country. I encourage you to push yourselves to make this public service what we know it can be,” the Deputy Governor added.

Acting Director of Human Resources Mrs. Michelle Donovan-Stevens in her congratulatory remarks to the recipients said, “You have a mantle on your shoulders, I am aware of the extensive Employee of the Quarter process, and you have done very well to come out on top.

As a public service we are reminded now more than ever that we are partners in our global economy. That means as public officers, we have to consistently prove that we are able to deliver the quality of service that our customers require.

I thank you for your professional commitment; I thank you for demonstrating there is greatness in the public service. You posses the talent and the professional posture that is required of public officers. Please continue to lead by example and while you are leading, mentor someone.”

The honourees in their response expressed their thanks to their co-workers who nominated them. Through a video presentation they said, “We say a haughty thank you for the confidence you entrusted in us. By your public display of confidence in us, we assure you that we will endeavour to keep striving for excellence.”

In addition to the seven honourees, Ms. Maritza Mercer of the BVI International Finance Centre and Mr. Wilton Frett of the Department of Technology were recognised as other top nominees. Both nominees fall under the Ministry of Finance’s umbrella, making the Ministry the winner of award.

The Employee of the Quarter initiative was launched in 2005 as a means of recognising public officers who exceed expectations and set an example for their fellow public officers. This service-wide ‘ministerial level’ recognition programme is administered by the Department of Human Resources’ Employee Relations Unit.
