The Social Security Fund is 34 years and counting

Press Release

    Our Pension Fund is Maturing

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, February 2nd 2012 - The St. Christopher and Nevis Social Security Fund is now 34 years old.

Wednesday 1st February 2012 is the anniversary date of the Institution which was inaugurated in 1978 to replace the National Provident Fund and to offer more meaningful benefits to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Since its inception, the Fund has steadily progressed to become a major source of economic stability both for insured persons and for the nation as a whole. Indeed it has come to be widely respected and regarded as the single most important agent of income insurance as well as an important source of funding for economic development. It has made significant contributions to a wide spectrum of activities ranging from education and housing to community development support, from sports to health and more recently national security.

The people of the Federation have had discussions in recent years about the status of the Fund. They have registered their suggestions for the necessary reform which will ensure that the Fund remains sustainable for future generations. The implementation of such reforms is imminent and will signify the appropriate response to the coming of age of Social Security.

To commemorate this anniversary the Board, Management and Staff will participate in Thanksgiving services at the Zion Moravian Church in Basseterre on Sunday 5th February on St. Kitts, and at Henry’s Memorial Wesleyan Holiness Church at Bucks Hill Nevis on Sunday 12th February.

The Board wishes to say thanks to the people of the Federation for the success that the fund has achieved to date, and extends an invitation to the public to join us in worship as we give God thanks for His grace and providence to our Institution over the years.
