Close to 20 convicted at Traffic Court

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE three most-recent sessions held at the Basseterre Traffic Court saw almost 20 individuals being convicted of various offences ranging from driving under the influence to driving without the proper lighting.

     

    The first of the three sessions took place on January 26, 2012 and was presided by Her Worship Josephine Mallelieu-Webbe.

     

    Sebastian Street, Newtown resident Owen Isaac was convicted of a March 28, 2010 offence of driving without due care and attention for which he was fined $800 to be paid within one month or serve one month at Her Majesty’s Prison.

     

    Ponds Extension resident Merlin Stapleton was convicted of April 1, 2011 offences of driving without due care and attention and driving under the influence. For the former, he was fined $500 to be paid within one month or serve one month imprisonment, and for the latter he was fined $1000 in one month or two months imprisonment.

     

    He was also disqualified from holding a driver’s license for a three-month period.

     

    Roger Jeffers of Camps Village, who was convicted of driving without due care and attention, was fined $400 which he has to pay within one month or serve an alternative one month custodial sentence. The offence was committed on February 24, 2011.

     

    Also presided by Her Worship Mallalieu-Webbe, the second session was held on the following day (Jan. 27).

     

    For the offences of driving without insurance and driving without a driver’s license, Challengers resident Cleon Osbourne was fined $1 000 and $500 respectively. Both fines are to be paid on or before April 27, 2012 or he would be required to serve one month in prison.

     

    The offences were committed on May 18, 2011.

     

    A $500 fine is to be paid by Kareem Morton of Hummingbird Development, who was convicted of a May 18, 2011 offence of driving without due care and attention.

     

    Convicted of driving an unlicensed vehicle, driving without a driver’s license, driving without insurance and taking vehicle without the consent of the owner, Eric Thompson was convicted and fined $300, $300, $1 000 respectively and cautioned on the final count.

     

    The Ponds pasture resident was also disqualified from holding a driver’s license for a six-month period. All offences were committed on July 8, 2011 and the sums are to be paid within one month or an alternative sentence would be imposed.
    Lower Monkey Hill’s Cecil Charles was convicted of riding a motorcycle while not licensed to do so, driving an unlicensed vehicle and driving an unregistered vehicle and was cautioned.

     

    He was also convicted of riding the motorcycle without insurance, riding the motorcycle when it was not fitted with a rear light and riding the motorcycle while it was not fitted with a light to illuminate the number plate. He was fined $300, $100 and $100 respectively, to be paid within one week or in default serve one month in prison. The offences were committed on April 8, 2011.

     

    Winston ‘Merchie’ Davis of St. Peters was fined $150 for failing to comply with traffic sign while Brian Prentice of Mansion was fined $150 for driving off the bus route and Lesroy Gumbs was charged $200 to driving without wearing a seatbelt.

     

    On Thursday (Feb. 2), a number of other individuals appeared before the Basseterre Traffic Court and were convicted and fined as follows.

     

    Roy Bidder of Stapleton Village - who was charged with driving without due care and attention and driving under the influence - was fined $500 and $1 000 respectively. He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s license for one month. The offence was committed on October 21, 2011.

     

    For driving without due care and attention on November 7, 2011, Basil Campbell of Keys was fined $500 while Faye Sutton of Lime Kiln was fined $200 for committing an October 3, 2011 offence of driving without due care and attention.

     

    Both Michael Henry of St. Peters and Stewart Griffin of Cayon were charged with similar offences and Henry was fined $300 while Griffin was cautioned.

     

    A $300-fine was imposed upon Travis Gardner of Keys Village for driving without due care and attention and Jomo Isaac of Conaree was fined $250 for using a cellular phone while operating a vehicle.

     

    Yashwant Saurvvase of Frigate Bay was fined $1 000 and $300 for the respective offences of driving without insurance and driving without a license. The offences were committed on February 1, 2012.

     

    A $500 and a $300 fine were imposed on Dwight Hendrickson of Frigate Bay for committing the June 20, 2010 offences of driving without insurance and driving without the relevant driver’s license.
