~~Adz:Left~~BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ONE of the Federation’s Magistrates sent a strong message to the nation’s youth earlier this week when youngsters were sentenced to serve time in jail for offences they were accused of committing.

A 17-year-old appeared before the District “A” Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 19, 2008 charged with “battery on police”. He was convicted and sentenced to serve two months imprisonment at Her Majesty’s Prison. The offence, according to police, was committed on March 26, 2008.

Another juvenile appeared before the said court on a house breaking and larceny charge, allegedly committed on March 17, 2008. The child, a resident of the New Road Housing Project, was convicted and sentenced to serve a six-month imprisonment at Her Majesty’s Prison.

A 14-year-old from Cayon Village was placed on bond for a 12-month period after being convicted for larceny of a cellular phone from Sylvester Pringle of Taylors Village.

The court ordered that the juvenile be monitored by the Department of Social Welfare, “is to attend school and classes regularly and punctually and is not to be found or seen in the company of undesirables,” a police press release informs.

The press release added that a $1 000 compensatory sum must be paid by the juvenile’s mother to the victual complainant in the case within the next three months or the parent would be incarcerated for a one-month period.

“On 15th November 2007 police responded to a report of a theft and after carrying out investigations, the juvenile was arrested and charged with the theft of a cell phone from Sylvester Pringle of Taylors Village,” as stated by a police press release.
