Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, February 6th , 2012 – The Deputy Governor’s Office’s online poll to determine the winners of the Efficiency, Innovate and Save Competition has closed and the winners identified.

In the public sector the winners are Paul Fenty, Althea Guishard and Diana Ferrol ranking first, second and third respectively while Glenda Ismael placed first from the private sector and Julia Christopher’s two entries placed second and third.

The competition, which began in January of 2011 and concluded in September, was opened to both the public and private sectors, inviting them to submit collaborative ideas on ways to make the public service stronger and more efficient while reducing operating costs.

The winners will be treated to a dinner and awards ceremony hosted by His Excellency the Governor Mr. Boyd McCleary, CMG, CVO. Also in attendance will be the Premier Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith, OBE and the Deputy Governor Mrs. V. Inez Archibald along with the winners invited guests.

Recently the Ministry of Finance and the Department of Human Resources announced Cabinet’s decision to reduce performance increments by 50% in the 2012 fiscal year and reduce the operating expenses of ministries and departments by 7%.

According to the Financial Secretary, Mr. Neil Smith, “These cost-cutting measures are being implemented to build up our cash reserves to ensure we have funds available to sustain Government operations for at least three months.”

Speaking at an HR Talk earlier this month the Financial Secretary shared, “Public officers will now have to do more with less. “I am encouraging all public officers to do their part to implement cost-cutting measures. Anyone with ideas on what we can do to cut cost in the public service are asked to share those ideas with the Ministry of Finance, the Department of Human Resources or the Deputy Governor’s Office. No idea is too small.”

The Deputy Governor’s Office has decided to re-launch the Efficiency, Innovate and Save Competition in March of this year as a means for persons to continuously submit ideas on ways in which Government can reduce operating costs.

The Deputy Governor’s Office remains committed to providing avenues for persons to share ideas on ways to improve the efficiency of the public service while improving service delivery.
