Works Ministry undertakes restructuring initiative

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, February 6th, 2012 – In keeping with Government’s commitment to ensure an effective and efficient public service, the Ministry of Communications and Works through a ministerial restructuring initiative welcomed Mr. Jeffrey Skelton, to oversee the Public Works Department, at a special meeting today.

    Emphasizing the ministry’s mandate to improve the territory’s infrastructure which includes the building or improving of major road networks was the message communicated to the over 150 Public Works employees where former PWD employees Mr. Skelton and Ms. Shirlyn Penn were re-introduced to the staff.

     

    Minister of Communications and Works Honourable Mark Vanterpool told the staff that he believes the Ministry is on the right track in terms of strengthening the Ministry and its Departments.

     

    “The decision we made to move Ag. Director Dr. Drexel Glasgow to be better utilise his talents in the area of planning and infrastructure development as the ministry seeks to approach infrastructural development more strategically.

     

    In addition to the restructuring measures, Honourable Vanterpool emphasised that he will do his best to ensure that the department has what it needs to function optimally.

     

    “Public Works staff are first responders in the event of a disaster or emergency situations and we want to ensure that the department is elevated to such a standard that the call for assistance will be to the Public Works Department first and not a private companies, therefore I will do what I can to make sure you have all that you need,” Minister Vanterpool assured the team.

     

    The Minister also told the gathering that money was approved for a new asphalt plant for the department that will take into consideration the health and safety of the employees using the facility.

     

    Public Works Department is charged with the responsibility of providing a formidable and advanced infrastructure network throughout the Territory and remains committed to provide sound, safe, well designed, constructed and maintained infrastructure in accordance with recognised codes.
