Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat, February 6th, 2012  –  A member of the Royal Montserrat Police Service (RMPS) has been charged with assault and several other offences following a three-week investigation by visiting officers from the Cayman Island and Bermuda police forces.

This was confirmed by His Excellency, the Governor Adrian Davis Monday in a press release. “… A member of the Royal Montserrat Police Service has been charged with the offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, wounding, disorderly conduct, and threatening language,” stated the release. The officer has since been taken before the Magistrate and was later released on bail.

The charges stem from an incident which occurred in the village of Drummonds following the arrests of George Leonard and George Farrell on the morning of December 17, 2011. The officer, now charged was suspended from duty while another senior officer was sent on compulsory leave pending further investigation.

Governor Davis early in January requested assistance from law enforcement officials from the Bermuda and Cayman Islands police forces. Six officers have been on island supporting the on-going investigating led by Deputy Commissioner Paul Morris and are scheduled to leave island today.

“Their report will be considered by the relevant authorities and further measures, if considered necessary and justified, will be taken.  The public will continue to be kept informed of any further significant developments,” the release ended.
