PM Douglas highlights the many faces of the Agro-Tourism Demonstration Farm

By: Erasmus Williams, Press Release (CUOPM)

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, February 7th, 2012 (CUOPM) – The Agro-Tourism Demonstration Farm Project which will be completed in two years time at Sir Gilles demonstrates to the twin-island Federation’s young, bright nationals the many faces of agriculture, the viability and importance of renewable energy and the multi-dimensional and ever-evolving nature of tourism in the nation’s economy.

The Project, which involves the Ministries of Agriculture, Energy and Tourism and the Government of Taiwan, is spread over twenty acres and will be a fascinating place for locals and visitors.

During his weekly radio call in programme “Ask the Prime Minister” on Tuesday, Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said a key feature of the Agro-Tourism Project will the growing of plants for the education of locals and visitors, the medicinal properties of which were long known by the African ancestors.

“In addition to providing a fascinating and educational activity for our visitors, our Agro-Tourism project will also remind nationals about the knowledge and insights of our own people, centuries ago.  And, hopefully, this will stir within us a desire to not simply admire and respect the knowledge and insights of our forebears – even though it is important that we do that, but to also build on that knowledge.

To, as a result of our own hard work and efforts, contribute to our people’s movement forward as well so that in years to come, generations will be able to learn not only about what our ancestors knew and contributed to mankind, but what we, those of us living today, knew and contributed as well,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He said that the educational component and an economic aspect that appeal to those who travel to St. Kitts and Nevis.

St. Kitts was named a top 2011 destination by both AOL Travel and British Airways. St. Kitts was ranked the #1 Caribbean vacation destination by US News & World Report in 2011.

“We in the Government, however, nonetheless keenly understand the importance of continuing the brainstorming, the hard work, and the ongoing quest for ways to enhance the competitive edge that got us here.  Each time these international rankings are announced, I visualize – not the rankings themselves, but what they mean to the local engineers, to local builders, dredgers, etc. who are then in a position to get the construction-related contracts that are triggered by these rankings.

I visualise the accountants and lawyers who are then in a position to generate more revenue as a result of the increased work associated with greater economic activity in our tourism sector. I visualise the truckers, the taxi-drivers, the local supermarkets, the hotel and restaurant workers, in other words, I visualise the vast spectrum of locals who stand to see their families’ social and economic standing enhanced as a result of the economic activity that these international rankings tend to generate,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
