Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, February 7th, 2012 – As the Solid Waste Department’s cutting crew works to clear the Territory’s roadsides and keep them litter free for the benefit and enjoyment of residents and visitors alike motorists are being advised to exercise extreme caution when passing members of the crew on the road.

In an invited comment Solid Waste Manager, Mr. Anslem Myers stated that drivers are not being prudent and are ignoring the signage that are placed by the department’s work crew. “Drivers continue to ignore safety cones, run down the signage that has been erected and drive past the cutting crews at dangerous speeds; in some cases injuring our Sanitation Workers,” stated Mr. Myers.

He explained, “In an effort to reduce the instances of vehicular damage caused by stray stones from the weed-whackers, the cutting crew does not always face oncoming traffic. Therefore when motorists speed past the crew in an effort to seemingly avoid any stray stones, the results can be potentially detrimental.”

Drivers are being advised that once the safety cones and “Cutting Crew at Work” signage have been erected, they should approach the areas with care and loudly honk to alert the Solid Waste personnel.

Mr. Myers commended the department’s Sanitation Workers stating that “The work teams are diligent groups of men who are committed to maintaining the aesthetics of the Territory”.

He added that in spite of the dedication shown, the Sanitation Workers constantly experienced instances of verbal abuse from some members of the public.

The department is advising the public to direct all complaints to the Road Town office, and to refrain from verbally abusing the Sanitation Workers. The office can be contacted directly at telephone 494-6245 or 468-3701 extension 4934 or 4935.

The Solid Waste Department is the Government agency responsible for the collection and disposal of community solid waste, as well as the promotion of proper waste disposal practices.
