    CASTRIES St. Lucia, January 30th, 2012 –  Government has announced the appointment of former Prime Minister Dr. Vaughan Lewis to the position of Special Advisor in the Ministry of External Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation.

     

    According to a Press Statement from the Office of the Prime Minister,  at the Ministry of External Affairs Dr Lewis will be concerned, among other areas, with the work of the Ministry on Caricom and OECS Relations;  exploration of possibilities for Relations with states in Latin America and the wider Caribbean; and development implications of the Caricom-European Economic Partnership Agreement. 

     

    Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Jadia Jn.Pierre-Emmanuel says Dr Lewis has also been mandated to function as Chairman of a Committee to Review the Foreign Affairs directions of St Lucia which was announced in the Governor General’s Throne Speech to Parliament recently. 

     

    “The matter of foreign affairs and foreign relations in Saint Lucia is being discussed a lot right now especially in the context of the China/Taiwan diplomatic relations.  Dr Vaughn Lewis has served as a professor of the Caribbean International Relations branch of the University of the West Indies and he has also worked with various universities in Great Britain and the United States in that particular field. 

     

    So what government is looking for is a policy direction on foreign affairs matters and Dr Lewis is well placed to ensure that the wealth of experience he brings to this position will lead St Lucia in the proper direction as it relates to our foreign affairs”.

     

    Dr. Lewis recently retired from the Institute of International Relations, University of the West Indies, Trinidad & Tobago.

     

    From 1982 to 1995, Dr. Lewis served as the Founding Director of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, and as Chairman the of the Committee formed by Government to advise on the establishment of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College of which he was subsequently Chairman from 1985 to 1995.
