CASTRIES St. Lucia,, January 30th, 2012 – The International Medical Corps (IMC) is currently facilitating a series of medical conferences conducted by volunteer doctors from Standford University in the US.

IMC is a global humanitarian, non profit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training, disaster relief, and development programs. IMC Program Director, Kimberly Mathurin explains since the St. Jude Hospital fire, the IMC has aligned with the HESS Corporation as their donor to restore the capacity of the hospital. 

“True to our mission, we've fostered sustainable healthcare by building the capacity of local institutions, and true to our promise to St. Jude hospital, we're now offering Continuing Medical Education training to the physicians and healthcare professionals at Saint Jude. We've also extended this island wide, so healthcare professionals are able to attend our seminars free of charge, lunch is also provided, and they are able to get CME credits which are required now for all healthcare professionals to obtain a certain number of credits per year.”

Conferences are part of the support the IMC provides to Saint Lucia to bolster the healthcare system on the island. Mathurin says, in addition they also provide technical, material and human resource support to the St. Jude Hospital. Conference facilitators are chosen from a pool of physicians based in the US, who are dedicated to the mission of the IMC.

“The topics are General Surgery and Critical Care and ICU management. So these two topics will be running concurrently. The General Surgery CME is going to be hosted like a round table discussion. Physicians are encouraged to bring in case studies to discuss and there will be a sharing of ideas on resolutions for certain medical situations, and for the second half of the day, attendees will visit the OR of the Saint Jude hospital and actually observe procedures going on.”

The current conference series is geared towards general surgeons, residents and medical students, however, Maturin says, generally conferences are open to nurses, EMTs, and all interested healthcare professionals.
