CASTRIES St. Lucia,, January 30th,  2012 – Contrary to some reports, the Government of Saint Lucia has not agreed to any proposal or deal involving the purchase of shares in the regional airline -  LIAT.

However, Prime Minister Honourable Dr Kenny Anthony says the government of Saint Lucia believes greater support needs to be provided to LIAT as that airline plays an important role in connecting the people of the region.

Dr Anthony says government will articulate its official position after it has considered numerous factors including presently funding support being provided to the non-regional airline to fly into Saint Lucia.

"There are burning issues of reform within the management structure of Liat that needs to be attended to and we believe that there are issues that currently face Liat that needs resolution.

That being said however the authority for considering a relationship with Liat is the Cabinet of Ministers of the Government for Saint Lucia and we have not reached the point where there is any proposal or any discussion with Liat on the issue but what I will say is,  we have an environment that is more sympathetic to the continued survival of Liat and we believe that not only is Liat facing unfair competition within the region but we have to take a fresh look towards extending support to Liat”.

Presently the Government and people of Saint Lucia own 1.11% shares in Liat.

On Tuesday January 31st, the three main shareholder governments in Liat namely  Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines  are scheduled to meet to consider options for the airline which lost US$14.8 million last year.
