    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  February 8th, 2012 – Over 200 youth will now use their newly sharpened skills when they meet with prospective employers tomorrow, February 9th at the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Job and Career Fair to be held at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex.

    The Job and Career Fair provide an opportunity for the youth to directly engage with prospective employers to find work opportunities. Over 30 employers are scheduled to interact with the youth and showcase available openings.

     

    A cross-section of businesses in tourism, retail, agriculture, health, marketing, real estate, utility and the public service will be represented. Opportunities range from beach attendants and front desk clerks to trainee surveyors, accountants and administrative officers.

     

    Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn expects to see a full turn out by the unemployed youths. “This is your opportunity to market yourself to an available, centralised pool of employers. Use the training gained at the Job Readiness Forum to equip you with that edge to shine.”

     

    The Minister also thanks the business community for responding to the call. He encourages more business to join the effort.

     

    BCQS International, Peter Island Resort, Marketing in Motion, Nagico Insurance, Myett’s Restaurant and Boutique, the BVI Tourist Board, the Government of the Virgin Islands, Brisani’s Restaurant, Long Bay Resort, MVW International, BVI Electricity, Pet Planet, One Mart and Rite Way Supermarkets are some of the businesses scheduled to attend.

     

    Of the 490 individuals who registered with the Youth Unemployment Register, 220 youths completed the Job Readiness Forum which exposed them to good work ethic and appropriate work behaviour. Topics covered at the forum include communication skills, customer service training, team building, personality profiling, resume writing and interviewing tips.

     

    Through the Youth Unemployment Register, the Job Readiness Forum and the Job and Career Fair, the Ministry of Education and Culture stands committed to creating an environment that encourages young people to become responsible, enlightened and motivated towards national development while being prepared to join the workforce.
