Basseterre, St. Kitts (February 03, 2005): Governments broad support for policies that empower and develop youth was reiterated by Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Sam Condor during a televised speech on ZIZ Television, on Tuesday evening.

During the six-minute address which commemorated February as Youth Month, the Minister of Youth noted that young men and young women are playing an increasingly significant role in the economic, social and political spheres of society and in the struggle for progress and development.

It is out of this recognition that Government continues to provide a platform of opportunities for the realisation of the aspirations and hopes of our Youth, he said.

In highlighting the importance of Youth Month, the Deputy Prime Minister explained that the occasion harbours tremendous potential to further harness and moblise the innovatory action of all our youth in the continuing process of establishing a better and more just society, and to a future of peace, friendship and understanding between all our people.

Minister Condor stressed that the process of youth development requires a multi-sectored approach. Ours must be the responsibility, to establish a suitable environment so that our youth can express their fundamental and legitimate concerns. This is a commitment from which my Ministry, and the Government in general, will never waiver.

The continued support of the private sector and societies cannot be divorced from this process. All of our resources and energies must be employed to help make a reality of the ambitions and deep routed ideas of our young men and women.

The Minister of Youth concluded by stating, Government will spare no effort in deepening its efforts at various levels and institutions and through the Ministry of Youth will design and implement practical programmes of action which take into account the ambitions and needs of young people.

It is my fervent hope that this years observance will be a defining moment in our history and that the end of the observance will not be an end in itself but a greater commitment by each member of this community to further advance the cause of all of our youth.
