BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TODAY, Wednesday, starts a 10-year jail term that 20-year-old Garvey Rogers of Conaree Village has to serve after being found guilty of an October, 20, 2007 offence of attempted murder.

On Monday, last, Rogers’ trial began when a 12-woman jury was charged with the responsibility of deciding on his innocence or guilt. According to the indictment, Rogers was charged with shooting fellow villager Devon ‘Junie’ Roberts three times in the back.

According to evidence presented in the case, the virtual complainant was on his way home when he sensed that he was being followed.  Roberts explained that it was then that he heard the report of a gunshot and felt a sharp pain in his back.

After recognising the identity of his assailant, Roberts tried to run away from the area but fell to the ground and was shot two more times in the back. Roberts explained that he pretended to be dead and his assailant fled the scene. ~~Adz:Right~~

On Tuesday, the jury retired for deliberations and soon after returned a guilty verdict of “attempted murder”.

Rogers stood in the prisoner’s dock as his fate was read to him and was informed by Justice Francis Belle that today is the beginning of his 10-year-sentence at Her Majesty’s Prison. Justice Belle told him that his punishment would include hard labour.

Moments after sentencing, Rogers was transported to Her Majesty’s Prison where he began serving his sentence.
