    Charlestown Nevis (February 2, 2005) As the Ministry of Tourism in the Nevis Island Administration continues its Week of Activities, the Charlestown Primary School captured the first prize in the 2005 Tourism Week of Activities Primary School Quiz Competition sponsored by the Nisbett Plantation Beach Club.

     

     

     

    Ms Serena Clarke and Ms Pearle Bergan, two Grade 6(1) students amassed a total of 401 points, ousting their 1st runner up, Ms Milan Smith and Mr. Stencer Bowrin of the Belle Vue International by 49 points.  The third prize went to the St. Thomas Primary School, Ms. Abaena Simon and Ms. Shanice Amory who received a total of 303 points.

     

     

     

    By the end of the third round, it was obvious that the Charlestown Primary had won, as they scored another perfect round.  They were tied with other schools in the first and second round, although the first round was perfect, but the second round no school had perfect scores.

     

     

     

    The categories were based on issues dealing with Culture and Heritage, Geography questions in terms of where one can find certain things and questions related to Caribbean Tourism.

     

     

     

    The competition saw nine primary schools participating in the event that was held at the Nevis Cultural Center in Charlestown on Wednesday February 2.  Belle Vue International, the newest private primary school in Nevis competed for the first time.  The other schools that participated were the Violet O Jeffers-Nichols Primary, St. James Primary, Gingerland Primary, St. Johns Primary, Prospect Primary and the Charlestown Preparatory School.

     

     

     

    A brief presentation ceremony followed the competition, and Education Officer, Mr. Joseph Wiltshire spoke on behalf of the Department of Education.  He congratulated all nine primary schools for participating in the event and noted that the activity was another opportunity for the students to display their talents, expressing that the principals, class teachers and participants deserved the highest commendation.

     

     

     

    Mr. Wiltshire also congratulated the winning school and expressed appreciation to the management of the Nisbett Plantation Beach Club for their continued support and sponsorship.  In conveying thanks to the Ministry of Tourism for its inclusion of the students in their week of activities, Wiltshire observed that the competition provided another avenue for the primary schools to continue to maximize the potential of the young people.

     

     

     

    We at the Department of Education recognize and appreciate the contribution of all stakeholders, as together we continue our quest to provide a holistic education for our youths, said Wiltshire.   

     

     

     

    Mrs. Kathy Johnson, Co-Manager of Nisbett Plantation Beach Club, not only gave brief remarks but presented each student with a book prize for participating in the competition.  She also presented a trophy to each of the winning school. The vote of thanks was given by the Director of Research and Development, Ms Elmeader Brookes.
