Inmate stole valuables from Coconut Grove owner
...gets additional three years

~~Adz:Right~~CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Dwayne Freeman of Rawlins, who is already in prison for other crimes, got an additional three-year sentence for breaking into the residence of Gary Colt, owner of Coconut Grove, and stealing valuables on November.

Freeman committed the offence on November 23, 2007, shortly before he was sent to prison for one year for possession of Cannabis and five years for possession of ammunition. The three sentences will run consecutively, and his family has reportedly said they would appeal against the ammunition charge.

According to Police Prosecutor Inspector Andre Mitchell, when Police officers searched Freeman’s house in January, 2008 and found ammunition, they also found a video camera, which was identified as the one stolen from Colt. 

Freeman was sentenced by Magistrate Yasmine Clarke for breaking and entering Colt’s dwelling house in Jessups, from which he stole one Sonny Handy Cam Digital Video Camera valued at EC$1 855, US$1 000, EC$1 000, EURD 500 equivalent to EC$1 860 and EC$500 in coins.

Freeman pleaded not guilty when the larceny charge was read to him on Tuesday morning but changed his plea at about 1:15 p.m.

In his submissions, the Police Prosecutor said Colt and Karin had left their residence at 1:00 p.m. and went to Coconut Grove. On return to the residence at 10 p.m., Karin found the house had been broken into and ransacked. She telephoned her husband, who in turn called the Police.

The money that Freeman stole was not recovered.
