Children excel at Schools’ Musical Expose 2008

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - DESPITE the low turnout of parents at the Schools’ Musical Expose 2008, children drawn from all primary schools on Nevis excelled as they showcased their musical talents on Wednesday night.

A parent, who interrupted his business trip to Trinidad to be present to watch his child participate in the event, was upset that parents and members of the public did not turnout in large numbers to encourage the children who have worked over the years to perfect what their music instructors have taught them.

“We are always talking about youth getting into crime and, yet when they do good things we do not come out to encourage them,” the parent said.  He hoped that when the event is screened on the local TV Stations parents would realise what they missed. He was also impressed that the event had started promptly at 6.05 p.m.

The Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry, Minister of Youth and Sports Hensley Daniel and Chief Education Officer Jennifer Hodge were present throughout the performance.

A 16-member committee led by the Coordinator Music Department, Anthony Woodroffee, has worked hard over the months to coordinate the musical event, which was introduced by the late Herald Michael Sutton.  Hodge said it was Sutton’s dream to see children equipped to enhance musical talents and “Nevis has not been the same with the absence of Mr. Sutton”.

Hodge said family and friends celebrated Sutton’s birthday on May 11.  She also said that the Schools’ Musical Expose 2008 was organised by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture.

Premier Parry told the children that excelling in musical talents would enable them to perform well in other subject areas. “I am pleased to see that we have a variety of presentations,” he said. The Premier encouraged the children to take music seriously, as it would help fight idleness.

Earlier in the evening when Premier Parry officially opened the event, he declared that it would have been outstanding.

Minister Daniel was impressed by the “excellent and wide variety” of talents. He said more music teachers were needed to equip the students with musical skills.
