BASSETERRE, St. Kitts- HUNDREDS lined up to purchase foods made from locally produced ingredients at today’s Eat Local Day commodity fair held at Independence Square.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and its subsidiaries in an effort to promote the use of local produce and meats and also to create “buzz’ for the September Agricultural Exhibition.

Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Cedric Liburd was on hand to partake in the mouth-watering spread and said he was pleased with the turn-out.

“It is good to see so many citizens coming out to the fair to eat local. The chefs have prepared so many wonderful and delicious meals and they are healthy too. I had breadfruit, green fig, peanut soup, potatoes, vegetables and lots of other delicacies.

This is what we need to get back to; eating from our land. It is much healthier and much cheaper for the consumers,” Liburd told SKNVibes.com.  Liburd recalled his youthful days when because of persons’ economic situation breadfruit and mackerel was the food of choice in his home and many others.

The Minister also recommended that persons plant at least one fruit tree and a little vegetable garden in their yards, something he hoped to see in every single yard in the near future. He said that seedlings were made available at the agricultural department for people wishing to grow fruit and other trees.

The Eat Local Day fair was so successful that the booths ran out of food before 2 p.m., leaving patrons disappointed. They opted to purchase different cured meats from the Nevis stall and local drinks made from watermelon, carrots, peanuts, limes and oranges.
