Mobile App Development enthusiasm moves to the next steps!

Mobile App Dev. Steering Cttee
By: Lorna Callender, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The success of the recent Mobile App workshop and the enthusiasm it generated has led to a commitment by all participants and facilitators to make the Mobile App project a sustainable and regenerating one.

The many professional arms of the Project have strengthened its structure. A key component is the local Mentors Group drawn from those versed in technology in both the private and public sectors.

Personnel from private sector companies like eCaribbean, IT Facility, Caribbean Credit Card Corp, SKNVibes, Social Security Board, K. Blackman & Associates and ZIZ Broadcasting were available to assist the participants as they carried out Team Exercises prior to the development of a local App.

The high level of interest displayed by the participants was most encouraging, and eager to ensure that the momentum was not lost, the local Mentors have already formed a steering committee to map out how future assistance could be facilitated.

They will get strong support from other components and personnel engaged in the Project. Minister Phillip has revealed that he is so pleased with the outcome of the workshop that he intends to retain the services of the BrightPath Foundation to conduct a follow up workshop.

Mr. Bevil Wooding, founder and Executive Director of BrightPath Foundation also reiterated BrightPath’s commitment to working with the government of St. Kitts-Nevis going beyond the four-day workshop.

Head of the Dept. of Technology, Christopher Herbert is planning to have the first post workshop meeting at the National ICT Centre on Saturday 25th February, 2012, at 10am to discuss the next steps in GoSKN Mobile Apps Development (GMAD).

In his letter to the participants, he wrote: “The GMAD Planning team, although pleased with the outcome of the workshop, is very aware that the true success of the venture is in its sustainability and steering to an end that has great national development impact.

It is to this end that we seek to continue the activities of the workshop, maintain our momentum and grasp the opportunities that are within our reach.”

In the recently held workshop, facilitators were overwhelmed by the output of not one but three Mobile Apps created by the students and students were awed to discover themselves as “legitimate agents of change in their society”.

The Apps launched were “Eye-See-You”, an app for reporting crimes using text messaging and the Internet; “Places to Eat”, a guide to local restaurants and dining spots; and “Time to Plant”, an agriculture-focused mobile app with tips and guidelines on when to plant common local crops.

In the upcoming meetings all are expected to show their absolute commitment to taking the process forward.
