Press Release

ST.JOHN'S Antigua, February 24th, 2012  --  Effective February 27, 2012 the Plant Protection Unit as part of its eradication programme for the Giant African Snail, will be carrying out a 3-4 week baiting exercise.

Owners of livestock within the controlled areas are therefore advised of the pending application of the snail baits and are urged to take the necessary steps in the exclusion of their animals from the treated areas.

The areas under control for the invasive pest include those areas within a one-mile radius of the Jolly Hill, Bolans New Extension, Cooks and Burma areas.  Materials that could carry the snails or their eggs include, but are not limited to, soil, sand, manure, potted plants, plant material, vehicles, used equipment and concrete blocks.

The general public is also reminded that it is an offence to remove Giant African Snails or materials that are infested with or could contain these snails or their eggs.

The Plant Protection Unit is appealing to members of the general public to assist in the effort to eradicate this snail by immediately notifying the Unit of any sightings or suspected sightings of this snail or activities that could spread the pest.

Persons are asked NOT TO REMOVE any Giant African Snails or snails suspected to be the Giant African Snail from any location where they are found but should immediately contact Plant Protection at 562-1923 or 764-1255.

The Plant Protection Unit falls under the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Housing & the Environment.
