Press Release

ST. GEORGE, Grenada,  February 27th,  2012  --  Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas has called on the people of St. Patrick to identify and develop sites that have the potential to bring tourists and economic activities to the parish.

Speaking at the celebration of the first anniversary of the St. Patrick Environment and Community Tourism Organisation (SPECTO) on Sunday, the Prime Minister hailed the tourism potential of various sites to provide employment for the people of the parish.

“We boast of mere sites of historical and geological significance. I urge us to change our view of these assets to one of development opportunities, with the potential for earnings and employment.

As a government, we are committed, where possible, to working with the owners of the lands on which these sites are located to provide access to the public and to tourists and visitors,” he declared.

Prime Minister Thomas, who is also the Member of Parliament for St. Patrick East, praised the work of SPECTO for “raising the awareness of the potential of our parish, both among our people and within the wider Country, to become more sustainable.”

The Grenadian leader pointed to the Levera National Park and its amphi-theatre, Piton, Lake Antoine, Carib’s Leap, the Slave Pen, Carib Stone and the Boiling Spring, among a list of attractions that can be developed and marketed for its tourism value.

He said he was particularly excited about the economic potential of turtle watching, which he said, should be developed along with the culture and cuisine of the parish to offer a range of services to visitors and bring benefits to the people of the area.

“I think one of the most intriguing areas of our Parish is the turtle nesting and turtle watching asset. There is growing international significance attached to this area, particularly as it relates to conservation and protection,” the Prime Minister said.

He called for enhanced security to protect and preserve the resources available to the community and to ensure the safety of those who are visiting the sites.
