BASSETERRE St Kitts, February 28th 2012 - It was definitely an exciting night, last Saturday ( 25th February 2012) as the five African beauties took to the stage, poise and confidence in the 2012 Miss Roots and Culture Pageant.
The pageant which was hosted by the History and Heritage Club of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College gathered a fair enough crowd who witnessed Miss Nigeria- Jackiema Flemming, Miss Libya- Lindesea Liburd, Miss Ethiopia Catherine Wilkinson, Miss Egypt Anissa eddy and Miss Zimbabwe Crystal Duggins, battled for the crown.
At the end of the night it was the Sandy Point beauty, Miss Nigeria- Jackiema Flemming who was adjudged the new Miss Roots and Culture amassing a total of 373 points.
Touching the judges with her eloquence and commendable public speaking skills, Flemming was also awarded the prize for Best Roots and Culture Promotional Speech.
Very consistent in the other segments, Miss Nigeria Jackiema Flemming, modelled the stage in a strapless dress made from ‘drinking straws’ dubbed ‘One’. In an excellent dramatic piece she captured the audience’s nod with ‘Proud to be Black’ in the talent segment. The Nigerian princess appeared before the gathering in a lovely fish tail, blue, gold and black, African Wear which was called ‘Ifoema’ meaning beautiful.
The newly crowned queen expressed that she had no idea that she would have won as she had little time to prepare and late financial assistance which were major setbacks. But, she is very much overwhelmed for her accomplishment.
The first runner up position went to Miss Egypt- Anissa Eddy with 364 points, who also captured the top awards for Best Roots and Culture Creative Wear and Best Roots and Culture African Wear.
Eddy, who was seemingly the crowd favourite, was brought on stage by four gentlemen as she sat on her throne, wearing a striking green and brown gown in the Roots and Culture African Wear Segment.
Miss Zimbabwe, Crystal Duggins snagged the 2nd runner up spot gaining 345.5 points and the award for Best Roots and Culture Performing Talent in which she executed impressive dancing skills.
Miss Libya Lindesea Liburd and Miss Ethiopia Catherine Wilkinson both performed exceptionally well.
Delonte Lewis and the reigning National Carnival Talented Teen- Junika Berry acted as the hosts for the night whilst entertainment was provided by the Road march champions- Grand Masters band,DjNinjah, the Rising Stars dance group and the local singing group ‘Upstairs Family’.
Miss Roots and Culture 2012 was crowned by Principal of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College; Dr.Hermia Morton-Anthony.
