One arrested for Newtown shooting

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE young man who was taken into custody - suspected of shooting another in his hand in Newtown - has been formally arrested and charged.

Eric Thompson of Pond’s pasture was taken into police custody on the evening of February 23, 2012, approximately one hour after 25-year-old Omari Tota of Newtown sustained a gunshot wound to one of his hands.

Information which this media house received suggests that an altercation had occurred between the two sometime prior and that this incident was possibly a revenge-exacting exercise. This, however, is unconfirmed.

The incident occurred at 9:45 p.m.at Carty Alley and Tota was taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for treatment.

SKNVibes understands that Thompson was picked up by the Delta Squad, which handed him over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

According to Head of CID Inspector Charles Smithen, on the following day (Feb. 24), the suspected shooter was formally charged with shooting with intent.

He is currently on remand and is expected to make an appearance before the Basseterre High Court of Justice shortly where an application for bail could be made and heard.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
