BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, March 5th,  2012 (CUOPM) - St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of Sports, the Hon. Glenn Phillip has expressed condolences to the wife, children, family and friends of the late Nevisian cricket star Runako Morton, died in Trinidad on Sunday night in a one vehicle accident.

“On behalf of the Government and People of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Staff at the Ministry of Sports, I want to extend condolences to Runako’s wife and children, his family and friends in Nevis and abroad, and the cricketing world,” said Minister Phillip.

He said the Federation’s grief is “truly profound as Runako has been closely associated with our Ministry’s programmes dating back as far as 16yrs ago when he passed through the Giant Malt - sponsored High School/Colleges Cricket Programme. “

“As a successful graduate of this programme he earned the distinction of being the first participant to be selected for the West Indies Men’s Senior Cricket Team,” said Phillip.

He said the Federation is proud of Morton’s accomplishments at all levels of competitive cricket.

“The respect he earned on the local, regional and international stage for his cricketing abilities and fierce competitive spirit is evident by the number of messages that has been expressed by his former teammates and cricketers from around the world,” said Phillip.

CMC reported that the former West Indies middle order batsman, 33, was the sole occupant of the vehicle that crashed into a utility pole on the Solomon Hochoy Highway in Chase Village in central Trinidad. He was on his way home from a cricket game.

The accident is reported to have occurred at around 11.00 pm (local time).

Morton had played 15 Test matches, 56 One-day internationals and seven Twenty20s for the West Indies since making his international debut in 2002.

He last played in February 2010 in a Twenty20 against Australia in Sydney.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, reporting his death stated:

Runako Shakur Morton (22 July 1978 – 5 March 2012) was a West Indian cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-handed offbreak bowler.

A lively, often unpredictable character, Morton is famous for a bizarre run-out with Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the 3rd Test of New Zealand vs West Indies Test series of 2006. Morton drove the ball to mid-on where Daniel Vettori was fielding and ran to the non striker end.

Chanderpaul, at the other end, initially took a few steps down the wicket but then turned and went back to the non-striker's end. Morton believed he was out, and furious at his captain, began to walk off. However, following a call to the third umpire it was decided that Morton had grounded his bat at the non-striker's end before Chanderpaul and hence was safe and that Chanderpaul was out.

As a batsman Morton has a reputation for hitting the ball very hard, but has problems picking up singles in between boundaries.
