BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EUSTACE EDWARDS, the man who stole US$15 out of a tourist’s pocket on Port Zante, was this morning (Mar. 6) sentenced to eight months imprisonment.
Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Inspector Charles Smithen informed this publication that Edwards appeared this morning at the Basseterre Magistrate’s Court and was sentenced to serve eight months at Her Majesty’s Prison.
“Edwards was also banned from going to Port Zante for the next two years, and failure to comply will result in him having to serve a further four-month imprisonment,” Inspector Smithen added.
At about 12:30 p.m. on Friday (Mar. 2), after a female tourist had purchased a number of items from a vendor at the Craft Market at Port Zante and placed her US$15 change in her pocket, Edwards put his hand into her pocket, took out the money and attempted to run away with it.
Some members of the public who had witnessed the incident were enraged and they ran after him. However, according to Inspector Smithen, while chasing Edwards, they summoned the CID, whose members immediately responded and joined in the chase.
Edwards was eventually caught in the vicinity of Irishtown and the US$15 was recovered.
He was taken to the Basseterre Police Station, where he was charged with larceny from the person.
Inspector Smithen also informed that the Saddler’s Village resident was immediately taken to the Basseterre magistrate Court, where he pleaded guilty and was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison.
