Cable & Wireless Press Release

Cable & Wireless initiates community clean up campaign for Independence

The full service telecommunications provider, Cable & Wireless has announced that it will sponsor the complete transformation of two communities one each in St. Kitts and Nevis as one of its Independence gifts to the people of the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis.  The scope of the project would include clearing weeds, planting of ornamentals and where necessary painting and refreshing public signage on the main roads of the selected communities.

To qualify for selection, community groups or individuals are asked to send a short proposal to Cable & Wireless indicating why their community should be chosen for the makeover.  A panel of judges selected from its staff will determine which community has presented the most compelling case following which the announcement of the two communities would be made.

VP Corporate Communications and Marketing, Laverne Caines explained, that the intention of the project is to involve a wide cross section if not all of its staff in the actual beautification of the
chosen communities.  “We owe our success as a company to the many customers across St. Kitts & Nevis who have been loyal to us for many decades.  We can say without contradiction that we have been part of the fabric of this society for as long as we have been independent and longer, and the silver jubilee anniversary of independence has provided an excellent milestone with which we can identify.”

    More…………..
Chief Executive, Patricia Walters commenting on the initiative, said: “Cable & Wireless continues to make every effort to enhance the quality of the social life of communities across the Federation.  She continued, “The Ferry Canopy installed at the pier in Charlestown, Nevis which provides welcomed respite to commuters between the islands, as well as the sponsoring of community signs last year around St. Kitts are two great examples of how my company has helped to enhance the social experience in the Federation.”

The deadline for the submission of nominations would end on June 15th and announcement of the winning communities will be made one week later on June 23rd.  Interested individuals and/or community groups should address their submissions to: The Beautification Committee, Cable & Wireless, Basseterre, St. Kitts.

Preliminary work should commence by the end of June to give enough time for the trees and plants to come to reasonable size by September.  Although the plan is to do most of the work in the initial stages of the project, the company has indicated that it would vest the continued care and maintenance of the project to an appropriate community organization to ensure continuity.
