Education Officer, Averille Elliot graciously extend appreciation to Mrs. Loretto.

    Charlestown Nevis (February 9, 2005)
Education Officer in the Nevis Island Administration, with responsibility for Language Arts Mrs. Averille Elliot, believed that it is important that the right tools be made available in order to develop students reading abilities.

She was at the time expressing gratitude on behalf of the Education Department to Mrs. Jean Loretto who made a significant donation of books to the St. Thomas Primary School earlier today (Wednesday).

She said, On behalf of the Education Department, I would just like to extend a hearty thank you to Mrs. Jean Loretto for your big contribution which is very important, because in this day when we are talking about our reading problems, we are sure that we have the materials that can really spark our students interest in reading.

She observed that Mrs. Loretto was very interested in the academic development and empowerment of the students.  She attributed that to the fact that Mrs. Loretto had come forward and donated several books to the school.  We are really seeing a partnering for success here at the St. Thomas Primary School and we only hope that this relationship would grow from strength to strength as the years go by, commented Mrs. Elliot.

Mrs. Loretto, in making the presentation expressed that the books came from students of an American High School where her grandchildren attend.  She also expressed that a notice was placed on the bulletin board of the school which read, Any books you have at home that you no longer use bring them to school and well take them to Nevis.

A cross section of the books that were donated to the St. Thomas' Primary School.
As a former Editor of News Week Magazine and who presently resides at Cades Bay, St. Thomas Parish, Mrs. Loretto told the students that it was their peers who did not know them trying to help them and that it was something that she and her family try to do every year.  She also said that they are hoping to do likewise in some other American city.

The most important thing in life is reading, she advised the students. No matter what you do, whether you are driving a car or doing gardening, or whatever you do, you must know how to read and read well.  Mrs. Loretto also advised them that books were more important than computers because you can put them down and go back to them.  She hoped that the students would enjoy reading the books and wishes that one day one of the students would not only read but eventually write a book.

The brief presentation was chaired by Principal of the School Ms. Earlene Maynard who also expressed her gratitude.  Mrs. Palsy Wilkin and Mrs. Versaille Powell, Education Officers and students of the school witnessed the presentation of the books.
