BNTF sponsors 14 in Maintenance Management course

    SALEM, Montserrat, March 13th,  2012   –   Fourteen representatives from agencies which have benefited from the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) have successfully completed a Maintenance Management course. The workshop was held over three days in February at the Montserrat Community College.

     

    Acting Chairman of the Project Steering Committee Owen Lewis in his opening remarks emphasised the need and urgency for such training to empower the local residents to undertake routine and preventative maintenance on their community buildings. He noted the importance of understanding building maintenance principles and procedures in Montserrat and commended BNTF efforts to sponsor such a workshop.

     

    In his address to the participants, BNTF - Montserrat Project Manager Mervin Browne, urged participants to be attentive to the workshop training and implement the knowledge gained.

     

    BNTF officials reported a 100% attendance from beneficiaries of BNTF 5 Project at the workshop held February 22nd - 24th, 2012. BNTF 5 Projects are Salem Early Childhood Centre, Glendon Hospital, Dental School, Brades Primary School and Little Bay Public Market. Other participants included representatives of the Land Development Authority, Brades Primary School, Project Implementation Unit, Department of Agriculture, and the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. Skill tradesmen and two maintenance managers attended which contributed to lively debates and questions during the sessions.

     

    The workshop was facilitated by Deen Kamaludeen of Deen + Partners Chartered Architects.  The sessions were designed to ensure understanding of the principles and procedures of building maintenance and management of maintenance, with emphasis on planning and evaluation of maintenance projects.  To meet this objective, a practical session was included to allow participants to prepare a maintenance plan for their respective institution using the sample format provided.

     

    Some topics covered include: Maintenance: Theory and Concepts; Types of Maintenance; Management of Building Maintenance; Understanding Buildings; Common Defects in Buildings – Categories; Preparation of Building Data Sheet; Preparation of a Maintenance Plan; Prepare of a Maintenance Schedule (Time Table); Costing of Work;  and Supervision of Maintenance works.

     

    Participants, in project groups prepared a maintenance plan for each BNTF 5 sub-project. This comprised of a maintenance schedule for one year, a detailed maintenance plan and organization charts for management and financial procurement.
