BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A man was yesterday (Mar. 14) charged with unlawful carnal knowledge of a child under 14-years of age.

A police press release states that formal charges were laid against the accused following a report of the unlawful act.

“The Commissioner of Police, though constrained by limitations on publication of these issues, wishes to reassure the general public that all efforts are consistently being made to ensure that incidents of this nature and of domestic disputes are dealt with professionally,” the release said.

According to the Offences Against The Person Act, it is against the law to publish the name of a victim under 16 years and also that of the accused, as well as any information that would lead to the identification of the parties involved.

This must be done in order to protect the child’s identity. However, the name of the accused can be made public after he or she has been tried and convicted of the offence.
