Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, March 16th, 2012  – The future generation of the Virgin Islands showcased their talent, skill and ability at the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Early Childhood Education Exhibition for Education Week 2012.

Held on the grounds of the Central Administration Complex today, March 16, the preschoolers dramatised, danced, recited poems and showed off their class work. Displays by D & B Learning Centre, Mactavious Tiny Tots, New Life Learning Centre, Little LiteHouse Child Development Centre and the Paradise Pre-School showcased clocks, books, animals, seedlings, parts of the body, numbers, transportation, ‘fruit creations’ and craft work.

Ms. June Grant, a seven year teacher of Mactavious Tiny Tots displayed students’ replicas of buildings in the East End community, butterflies, and books depicting night and day scenes, numbers and colours.

She said that they work very close with the students to teach them the various lessons. “The students are cooperative but it takes patience to teach the different skills and concepts, but I enjoy the work,” she added.

Mrs. Donnette Matthew, Manager of the Little Lighthouse Child Development Centre said students are taught a different theme each month. “This month we are focusing on weather. Last month, we focused on the farm.”
She said, “Students also participate in field trip exercises which encourages learning through play and aids in developing their skills through the formative years.”

Other schools participating in today’s Early Childhood Education Exhibition include the Bethany Baptist Pre-School, Visions Early Learning Centre, Agape Total Life Academy New Testament Church of God Pre-School and Kids Connection.

Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn was pleased by the students’ renditions and encourages the educators, parents and students to continue their pursuit for excellence.

Education Week 2012 will culminate with its first Education Summit on Saturday, March 17th at 6:30 pm at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium. Under the theme, “Building the Local Knowledge Base for Global Competitiveness” panellists will lead discussions on the challenges facing the Territory’s Education System and devise solutions to move forward.

Education Week is an annual event hosted by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Department of Education to highlight and instil the importance of Education to the Territory.
